Painter and Sculptor
A pioneer in sculpture, Peter Magdenko was the first artist to use Siporex as a sculpting medium. He used it in the only existing bust of Canada’s first Prime Minister Sir John A. MacDonald. In 1969 Canadian
Consulting Engineer wrote, “Magdenko’s sculpture was a forerunner in the material which is now being consumed ... by school, college and university art departments across Canada.”

Fauves Postimpressionist
The Globe and Mail’s long-time art critic Pearl McCarthy described Magdenko’s work as post-impressionistic. McCarthy, now deceased, wrote in 1966 that she was struck by one painting in
particular, “... in which
the glow of the
summer in sun and
breeze is a
kind of Fauves period
rhapsody.”
